In 1981 the Big Horn County Historical Museum moved the Thomas LaForge Cabin from Lodge Grass, MT to the museum grounds. LaForge was a white Crow scout with the U.S. Army during the Indian Wars under Lt. Col. George Custer, guided the surveyors to the proposed site of Fort Custer, and for a time served as an interpreter at Fort Custer. The cabin was restored by museum volunteers after being moved. For the past 36 years, the original restoration has deteriorated, and the cabin needed professional restoration.
The grant allowed Big Horn County Historical Museum to remove rotted logs, hand plane new logs and window bucks, and remove and replace the chinking.
