The Extreme History Project – Nevada City Cemetery Documentation

Cemeteries are a reflection of the longevity and continuity of the communities in which are located within, making them important historical sites. This is especially true of Nevada City’s historic cemetery. Nevada City’s history intertwines with that of Virginia City, another one of Montana’s earliest mining towns. The Extreme History Project’s goal is to complete a baseline grave marker assessment in the Nevada City Cemetery.

The Montana History Foundation funded the Extreme History Project to undertake this grave marker assessment to document information about the state of grave marker preservation, marker size, design, materials, symbols, words, grave features, and more. The information will be used to create an interprative map of the cemetery and a plaque bearing the names of those buried in the cemetery, ensuring that the community’s past residents are not forgotten.
