Hockaday Museum of Art – Photo Exhibition

The Hockaday Museum of Art purchased a large collection of Harry Lee Harpster, Jr.’s photographs, and MHF funded the museum to create three exhibits of the photographs. Harpster was prolific at the United States Department of Agriculture Aerial Photography Field Office, producing photos from 1954 to 1981. Harpster’s family was from Butte, and his photographs covered subject matter related to Montana and southern Alberta, Canada. There are seven Indian reservations and two Albertan reservations represented in the collection.

The museum printed 74 images from the collection using the silver gelatin method, remaining true to the technique that Harpster used. They also mounted, matted, and framed the photographs.
