Job Title: Development Director
Reports to: President/CEO
Classification: Exempt (full-time, permanent, with benefits)
Salary: $50,000 – $75,000 (depending on experience)

The Montana History Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit based in Helena, seeks a dynamic, engaging, and outgoing Development Director to grow our fundraising program.

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Development helps further our mission to preserve and interpret Montana’s history through grantmaking and sponsored projects. Within the team, the Development Director leads all fundraising efforts for the organization. The Development Director is a self-starter who is able to work effectively without direct supervision and who possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Frequent in-state travel and occasional national travel is required.

The Right Candidate will:
• meet current and prospective donors on a continual basis to establish effective communication.
• oversee direct appeal program (summer and year-end appeals), other donor mailings and fundraising drives.
• actively grow the online and monthly giving programs; develop gift recognition programs.
• be responsible for major gifts and planned giving.
• coordinate and collaborate within the team on grant seeking activities
• direct all fundraising drives.
• work closely and effectively with CEO, staff, and board of directors.
• maintain an accurate fundraising database of donors, prospects, and contact history.

The Right Candidate will bring:

• passion for Montana, its people, and its history (essential).
• knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques, including donor prospecting, cultivation, and stewardship.
• experience in coordinating some or all aspects of direct mail appeals, monthly giving, major gifts, and planned gifts.
• experience and familiarity with fundraising software (Raisers’ Edge or similar).
• experience in program administration and planning.
• an ability to work with and motivate staff, board members, and other volunteers.
• exceptional verbal and written skills
• willingness and demonstrated ability to initiate donor contacts and make initial contact calls.
• ability to listen and communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and ideologies.
• discretion and confidentiality.

The Right Candidate will have:
• 3-5 years of professional fundraising and/or sales and marketing experience required.
• exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to develop a high level of trust with donors.
• bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university required.
• 3-5 years of experience working in the nonprofit, cultural, or higher education sectors.
