The Fort Benton Community Improvement Organization received a grant from The History Foundation to repair, restore, and replace interpretative signs around the Fort Benton Steam Boat Levee. Fort Benton CIO replaced 20 of the 24 signs that had deteriorated after 30 years of Montana weather. These signs enlighten the public not only about Montana history, but about United States history. The signs feature information on Fort Benton’s first fire engine house, the town’s Western gunslinger history, and more.
The Museums and History of Fort Benton brings several thousand visitors from around the world to visit, eat, stay, and shop. The signs are key to the Fort Benton experience. Even when the museums are closed, visitors tour the Fort Benton area and peruse the signs.
